Church Action on Poverty

Church Action on Poverty is a national ecumenical Christian social justice charity, committed to tackling poverty in the UK. It works in partnership with churches and with people in poverty themselves to find solutions to poverty, locally, nationally and globally.  Based in Manchester, CAP works in all four nations of the UK, as well as maintaining a Parliamentary Office in Westminster.

Church Action on Poverty believes that the Gospel calls on us to stand alongside those for whom poverty is their daily living experience.  We believe that people with direct experience of poverty are the real 'poverty experts.'

1. Key questions for the election

The General Election is an excellent opportunity to make poverty a priority for the political parties. Alan Thornton sets out key questions in relation to CAP’s three campaigns: Debt on our Doorstep, Asylum destitution and a Living Wage.

Debt on our Doorstep
Do you support a legal ceiling on the cost of consumer credit?

Asylum destitution
What should done to tackle the destitution of asylum seekers?

Living Wage
Do you support the government doing research on how much an adequate income is, to base the national minimum wage on?

Background information on all these questions is available on our website.

2. What to do with the questions…

a. Ask the candidates

b. Organise a public meeting

c. Tell us what they said
